I’m in a band. It’s not a rock band. It’s more of an old-fashioned band with 2 clarinets, 2 trumpets, guitar, drums, an amazing singer and me on the keyboard. We had our first ever gig (with all of 3 songs) on Saturday night and it was epic.
People stopped, some listened, and there was even applause at the end. Whoop whoop!
The best bit, though, was how great it was to play music with other people again. At school I was in every band, choir and orchestra going. I was at an all girls’ school. The symphony orchestra was joint with the boys’ school. I played the piano but wanted another instrument as well, so top of my consideration was whatever would get me in the symphony orchestra as quickly as possible. There were far too many good violinists and clarinetists and the like so, after a little research, I became the first bassoonist in either school. I was in the orchestra within 6 months. Result.
I loved it. It’s nice to play music on your own, but it’s much more fun to play with other people. Which makes me wonder why it’s taken me so long (it’s a good 20 years since I left school – ouch) to do it again.
In any case, we shall be carrying on. I’ll let you know as soon as we’re packing out Wembley. Give us 6 months….

Ooh! Me too! Have just started fiddling (defiantly (spelling deliberate) not violin) again after 20 years of not picking it up and four (ish) years of no music.
Can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying it…

I can’t for the life of me remember what you play. I’m guessing clarinet. Did I get it right?

No. The clue’s in the “fiddling” bit. It is a violin. But I’m playing fiddle music, not classical. HDW would have a fit…
But I am singing evensong next week too…

You’ll have to post some up here for us to have a listen. Sounds wonderful!
Have you started your children with music lessons yet? We’re inheriting a piano from an aunt (she’s getting another one) but we haven’t received it yet. The children are (or at least were a few months ago) keen to start. I wonder if I should get them started on a keyboard while we wait for the piano (and the space to fit it in).

No music lessons yet. H is too young (just 3). I think we might start music lessons when he’s 5 or so, unless he shows signs of being the next Mozart (nothing seen so far…). My aunt is a music teacher and she said that it’s best to wait until they’re 5, 6ish, although if your little ones are keen then I think it’s great to let them have a go.

I think that their future music teacher will be delighted you waited. I hope all goes well – keep us posted!
