A Strange Consequence of Inherent Sexism

January 27, 2014

Three anti-polio workers were killed in Pakistan last week, and 7 were killed the week before.

There’s a myth in Pakistan, propagated by the Taliban and other Militants, that the vaccine is a western plot to sterilise muslim boys.  Many families are therefore refusing to allow their sons to be vaccinated.  As a sop to the authorities distributing the vaccine, however, they are prepared to offer forwards their daughters, being less valuable.  This has three main consequences:

1. Anyone distributing the vaccine, or even guarding those distributing the vaccine, is seen as a legitimate target, and many have been killed.

2. Pakistan is one of the only countries in the world in which polio is rife….

3. ….although not amongst the female population.
