The Coolest, Hippest Place in Town Is….Mothercare!

February 3, 2014

There was only one place to be in Islamabad this weekend.

Mothercare has opened  Yes, Mothercare.  For the uninitiated, it’s a shop selling baby clothes, toys and accoutrements. I have walked past Mothercare a thousand times in the UK without paying it the slightest bit of attention.  On Saturday, however, we got in the car and drove across the city with the sole purpose of walking through its pearly doors.

It turns out that there’s also a Mothercare in Singapore.  I know this because I was looking for a photo and came across this on Flickr:

We went.  Our neighbours went.  The lady who lives around the corner went.  When we got there I met two of the mothers from school.  There was a definite sense of giddy excitement at the opportunity to purchase non-toxic or lead-painted toys.

Simple pleasures.

There is also the slight frisson that we need to make the most of it whilst we can.  Mothercare is in a new shopping mall (so new that they’re still building it.  You walk through the building site to get to the bit that’s open. Not a hardhat in sight.  Only in Pakistan…).  There is another shopping mall in Islamabad but we’re not allowed to go to it  (terrorist target etc etc).  We reckon it’s a matter of minutes before they ban this one.

In the meantime, however, it’s the hottest property in town which is, I suspect, something of a novelty for Mothercare.
